Deuteronomy 4

Deuteronomy 4 - Israel Urged to Obey God's Law

  • Moses said, "You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you"
  • If the people follow God's laws they will inherit the land.
  • The Lord spoke to the people from the midst of the fire; they heard the sound of words, but they saw no form-only a voice.
  • The Ten Commandments were written on two tablets of stone and the Lord commanded Moses to teach the people the statutes and judgments so that they may perform them in the land that they will possess.
  • People were encouraged not to make idols and not to worship things like the stars, moon, and sky, but to worship God.
  • God is a jealous God and does not want anything to come before Him.
  • "Jealous" from Deut. 4:24 in Hebrew means to be zealous, used to describe the character of God. This does not mean to envy someone or something.
  • If the people become corrupt and make any kind of idol, they will perish from the land.
  • If you fall away from God, but turn back and seek him, the Lord is a merciful God and he will not abandon you.
  • Hebrews 6:4 explains more about falling away.

  • The Israelites went to Edrei and battled Og, King of Bashan, and his armies. God said, "Do not fear him, for I have delivered him and all his people and his land into your hand; and you shall do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites."
  • They took over sixty cities leaving no survivors.
  • Moses divided the land God had given them.
  • The Reubenites and Gadites got Aroer, the valley of Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead.
  • The half-tribe of Manasseh got the rest of Gilead and all Bashan.
  • Jair, the son of Manasseh, was given Argob
  • Machir was given Gilead
  • God commanded the valiant men to cross over the Jordan to possess the land which the Lord your God will give them.
  • Moses asked God, "Let me, I pray, cross over and see the fair land that is beyond the Jordan." But the Lord God told Moses to go to the hilltop and lift his eyes to the west, and north, and south and east, and see it with your eyes, for you shall not cross over this Jordan. But charge Joshua...for he shall go across at the head of this people and he will give them as an inheritance the land which you will see.
Themes:
  1. Division of the land that God had given to His people
  2. Joshua will lead the people across the Jordan.

Deuteronomy 2

Deuteronomy 2 - Wandering in the Desert

  • God reminds His people that he has been with them for forty years. Moses leads the people to Mount Seir, but they can't take that land as it belongs to Esau. God asks the people to buy food and water from Seir.
  • God is leading the Israelites around Moab and over the brook Zered. They crossed over Ar, but they could not take possession of that land either.
  • God commands Moses to bring the people through the valley of Arnon to Heshbon, where Sihon (the Amorite) is King. God said to begin to take possession and contend with the King in battle.
  • The Israelites obeyed God's commands and defeated Sihon, his people, and took over all the surrounding cities.
Themes:
  1. The Israelites obeyed God's commands
  2. The Lord God has blessed His people in all that they do; He has known their wanderings through the great wilderness; and they have not lacked a thing.

Deuteronomy 1

Deuteronomy 1 - Israel's History After the Exodus
  • Moses spoke to the children of Israel.
  • The Lord God said, You have stayed long enough at this mountain. Turn and set your journey and take possession of the land that the Lord swore that He would give to your fathers.
  • Moses chose wise and discerning men from the tribes and appointed them over the people with authority to judge fairly.
  • The Israelites arrived at the destination, Kadesh-barnea, where God had placed the land before them, to go up and take possession.
  • 12 men, one leader from each of the tribes, went before the rest to search out the land.
  • The people grumbled and complained and said, "Because the Lord hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us."
  • The people became afraid and did not trust God. Moses said, "Do not be shocked, nor fear them. The Lord your God who goes before you will Himself fight on your behalf."
  • The Lord heard the sound of the people and He was angry, for they did not trust Him.
  • God said to Moses, "Not a man of this evil generation shall see this land that I swore to give your forefathers, except Caleb, Joshua (for he will cause Israel to inherit the land), your little ones, and your sons."
  • The people realized they sinned against the Lord, so they wanted to go up and fight for the land. God spoke to Moses saying, "Say to them, Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you; otherwise you will be defeated before your enemies."
  • The people did not listen. They rebelled against the command of the Lord. Then, they were chased out and crushed by the Amorites.
  • Then they returned and wept before the Lord, but the Lord did not listen to their voice nor give ear to them.
  • They remained in Kadesh for many days.
Themes:
  1. Israelites did not trust the Lord God
  2. There was rebellion and disobedience towards God
  3. The people were defeated because God was not among them

Matthew - Chapter 1

Matthew - Chapter 1

First of all...God made the Earth, the Universe, and Everything in it. God is bigger than anything you can think of and He lives in Heaven. About 2,000 years ago, God sent His son to Earth and His name is Jesus. God wanted to give Jesus really good parents, so He chose Mary to be His mom and Joseph to be His dad.

Cool Fact: Jesus is also called Immanuel, which means "God with us"

Memory Verse: "Mary will have a Son and you will call Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." -Matthew 1:21
